Patricia Swannell - A Meditation on Time

Patricia Swannell - A Meditation on Time

19 April - 20 June 2018

in collaboration with Circus, at 58 Marylebone High Street London W1U 5TH
Open 10 am - 5 pm

Swannell’s work explores our relationship with, and effect on, the natural world around us. Trees, the lungs of the earth, are potent signifiers. Rooted in the ground while reaching to the sky, they connect us to both past and future human generations. The exhibited work represents a meditation on time – embedded in the environment we inherit and the legacy that we leave behind.

The trees that shape the adjacent Marylebone churchyard are portrayed in Swannell’s detailed drawings that materialise the passing of time and give a tangible form to ephemeral moments in the natural world.

Also showcased is Swannell’s print and photography project with the Woodland Trust, Legacy: A Reciprocal Tribute. This work, at the Queen Elizabeth Diamond Jubilee Wood in Leicestershire, started in 2014 and will continue for the next six decades, recording the growth of the woodland by photographing the same family every year as the trees in the background shift, grow and transform alongside them.

In A Meditation on Time, Swannell continues her ongoing preoccupation with nature and the effects we have on it, questioning the value we place on the environment that sustains us.

The exhibition has been curated by jaggedart in collaboration with Circus.
