The Held series was inspired by the sphagnum moss found on the moorlands of Juliet and Jamie Gutch's native Yorkshire. Sphagnum moss holds water, preventing decomposition of plant matter so that over thousands of years peat is formed, crucial for holding and ‘locking in’ carbon. The pieces respond to the wonder of this vital environmental balance: each mobile holds a stone, and the equilibrium of the whole arises from that gesture. 'Held' forms part of the duo's current work around sphagnum moss. Other projects include funding to develop a possible installation around moss and health for Bradford2025, and the creation of a sphagnum moss-inspired design for a restored fountain in the centre of Ilkley, linking the town with the moor above.
