FT Critics' Choice: Earth, Wind and Stone

FT Critics' Choice

"A quartet of artists whose work, formally rigorous yet fragile, mimics the ephemeral in nature. Juliet and Jamie Gutch make delicate wooden and painted metal mobiles, evoking leaves, where elements sway in balance yet are distant from one another. Kazuhito Takadoi grows then picks the grasses that he sews through paper, creating minimalist but opulent abstract sculptures that change colour as the grasses age. Jude Tucker's subjects are flowers, seeds and trees, whose details she carves in stone, fixing transience in an immutable material. Understatement, reflectiveness, exquisite craftsmanship, characterise all these unusual sculptors."
