Katherine Jones has been shortlisted with three printmakers for The Art's Foundation Fellowship Award 2013 in Printmaking.
She has also won the 'Printmaker of the Year' award and residency as part of Printfest which takes place in Cumria in May this year.
SHORTLIST ANNOUNCED FOR £10,000 PRINTMAKING AWARD
VICTORIA BROWNE, DAWN COLE, KATHERINE JONES and ISABEL ROCK have been shortlisted for the 2013 Printmaking Fellowship.
The winner of the award will be announced on the 24th January at the Arts Foundation Awards 2013 by Antony Gormley, trustee of the Arts Foundation who says;
‘The selection of artists shortlisted for the 2013 awards have proved what extraordinary talent we have in the UK today. Although only one artist will go through to win the award their original nomination and then selection onto the shortlist already proves that the are producing notable work and we are very proud to announce the line-up in all categories awarded this year.’
The judges for Printmaking who selected the four artists from a longlist of nominated artists were judges Dr Susan Collins (Director/Slade School of Art), Craig Hartley (Keeper of Prints, Fiztwilliam Museum) and Anne Desmet (artist & Editor of Printmaking Today).
The Foundation is celebrating its 20th year of supporting emerging artists this year with a superlative shortlist of artists across 6 artforms who have shown great promise through their existing work. £10,000 fellowships in Composition for Musicals, Design for Performance, Screenwriting, Still Life Photography and Sculpture will also be awarded this year.
The Arts Foundation
The Arts Foundation exists to help artists and celebrate the existence of art. Since the inception of its Fellowship Scheme with an anonymous bequest twenty years ago, the Trust has awarded over £1.4m supporting numerous artists from the fields of Performing and Visual Arts, Crafts, Literature, New Media, Film and Design. Its remit is specific – to support the individual artist. Awards of £10,000 are made to talented, emerging artists at a time in their careers when they have shown commitment to, and reached some standing in, their artform. At this critical stage a period of relative security in order to explore new avenues or consolidate existing work is often crucial. Awards are made on the basis of both talent and need to artists living and working in England, Scotland, Ireland and Wales.
Katherine Jones
In 2007 Katherine was awarded a three-year research fellowship in Printmaking by the City & Guilds of London Art School where alongside her teaching she was able to experiment with materials and techniques. In her current work she uses mainly traditional printmaking techniques with collagraph to add and subtract colour and create contrast until the piece is realised.
The house motif evident in her work is used to convey the tension between security and vulnerability, safety and overprotection, a central theme in her work. Her art has featured in exhibitions abroad and in the UK including the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition 2012 where she exhibited Bubble High, an artist's book inspired from working alongside poet Retta Bowen during the Art on Poetry: season of artist's books at the Royal Festival Hall.
